I came up with a quote that has proven to speak to my situation concerning patience that says, "Don't see your WAIT as a WEIGHT...it's a PROCESS!" This quote means sooo much to me. It has gotten me through some extremely restless times. In today's society, we want everything NOW! What I've learned, though, is that "The PROCESS is more VALUABLE than the END RESULT!" I encourage you to watch God work and appreciate your process!
Until next time...continue to be patient...learn from your process! The end result will prove to be more rewarding than that of a premature decision.
Am I truly leaning on God while I wait on Him to open the next door in my life? This is just me taking an honest inventory of myself. I am confident that I am being obedient by excericing patience. The quarrel I have with waiting on God is understanding the thin line between actively waiting and getting in God's way by trying to make things happen on my own. Take my situation for instance. I feel that it is time for a career change because where I currently work, it feels like more of a job and less of a career. Don't get me wrong...I appreciate having a job in this unstable economy and I thank God every day for blessing me with the affordability to pay my bills and stay above water drowning waters. At the same time though, being the progressive thinker/dreamer that I am, I know that more is possible. I know that having a career that promotes upward mobility is feasible. And I believe that while you wait on God you must do your part... but I struggle with determining whether or not I have gone past actively waiting" and entered into "getting in God's way."
I can go on and on about this but I want to hear from some friends and family. I know for sure that many people feel the same way I feel right now. You may not be waiting on a new job/career like a lot of us are, but it may be that you're waiting on God to send you a significant other or you may be waiting on God to make a way for you to purchase a house or a car. Some married couples are trying to conceive a child and are waiting on God make their dream come true.
How do you know that you are waiting the way that God wants you to wait? Through this discussion, we all may learn a more EFFECTIVE way of waiting on God.
Until next time... until God opens that next door for you, praise Him in the hallway!
I feel as if God has me in training ...for something. I really do! Among all of the events He has had me do, last Tuesday, March 27, 2012, I took to the stage at Busboys & Poets on 14th St. & V St. for the very first time. Mind you, I have been frequenting the Busboys Open Mic sessions for years and have never built up the courage to get on stage because I am very critical about what people think of my poetry. When I write poetry, I write in a way that allows people of all ages to relate and be impacted. Although, it isn't as simple as "Roses are red and violets are blue, " I never had the desire to write "so deep" that people couldn't fully grasp my meaning. All in all though, my message was well received ...as you can see in the video.
It was like, ever since I prayed to God, the week prior, to give me the tools to do what He would have me to do, ...I've been able to "turn off" fear. Well, to be honest, I think it began in 2009 when my pastor asked me to bring forth the message (I don't necessarily call it preaching for humility purposes lol) for a Youth Day Service. I spoke on "Facing Your Fears." That message was so beneficial for me because that's exactly what I was doing. I was paralyzed with fear when asked to stand in that pulpit.and I faced my fear! ....but I digress!
Soooo last Tuesday was my first time on stage and after speaking at the DC Trayvon Rally at Freedom Plaza the Saturday before and the Candlelight Vigil the following Monday, I was on a "Poetic Activism" high! The Trayvon Martin case has really plucked my heart strings and I still am high strung on calling people to action and getting people involved in this movement ...all with the poem I wrote, "Who Will Cry For The Little Boy, Trayvon Martin?". I don't plan on stopping. We have a ways to to go and I just believe that everyone has the capacity and wherewithal to make a difference with the gifts and talents that God has given them!
Until next time... get involved! You'll regret it if you don't!
Wow! The DC Justice Rally For Trayvon Martin on this past Saturday, March 2012, was absolutely amazing! And to think that it was put together in 4 days by 4 young African American women...nothing short of phenomenal. I had the privilege and the honor of sharing/delivering the poem ("Who Will Cry For The Little Boy, Trayvon Martin?") I wrote for Trayvon Martin. To be standing in front of Disrict Building on 14th & Pennsylvania where they had to block off majority of the street/block because there were so many people, and deliver a poem that that really hit home for me, was UNBELIEVABLE! I stood at the top of those stairs in astonishment. There were thousands of people, not hundreds like the media told you, of ALL NATIONALITIES AND AGES. In my head, I'm thinking, I am literally apart of history in the making. I couldn't wrap my mind around it. The people were so adamant about who and why they were supporting. To see all of the children in attendance, holdig up their skittles, tea, and signs for protest was so surreal for me.
I just kept saying to myself, "God is up to something!"
Until next time...continue to fight for JUSTICE! NO JUSTICE...NO PEACE...LITERALLY!!!
I am honored to say that I have been asked to deliver the poem, "Who Will Cry For the Little Boy, Trayvon Martin," at the Justice Rally in Downtown, DC at Freedom Plaza on 14th & Pennsylvania Ave, NW. it will be held Saturday, March 24, 2012, this Saturday. You are asked to wear all black and/or a hoodie.
I truly feel blessed and humbled to be asked to present my expression of how I feel about the Trayvon Martin case. This is, indeed, a defining moment in my life and in my writing career. I put my heart into this poem because I can't help but to think about the world my future children will be born into. It's really scary how you think times have changed and then tragedies like this occur.
The world can be a cruel place sometimes...BUT God is still good and He is still in control! If you're in DC on Saturday, please come by and support the cause because it effects us all no matter what.
I've been searching my old blog and I came across a post with this pic of my fraternity brother, Bro.Martin Luther King, Jr. when he just crossed into the "House of Alpha" (became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.). I've always wondered why I never could find any pics or anything that really validated his membership. Well, after the ceremony of the showing of the MLK monument that our illustrious fraternity spearheaded, BET put together a short documentary of Bro. King as an Alpha. I was completely amazed as I'm sure a lot of people were. (Video below)
Look at these brothers, above! They are clean! Bro. King had to be like
18 when he crossed. Look at 'em cheesin.' He looks so excited! Wow! I
feel so proud right now, just knowing that he and I have something so
dear to us in common. It means a lot to me to know that Alpha has
impacted our lives and had a big hand in grooming us to be the men we've
come to be. Absolutely amazing!
Looking at Bro.King smile so
proudly makes me recollect the feelings I had when I crossed. Sharing
something so dear to me with the man who, without a doubt, is one of the
main reasons African Americans are accepted the way we are today is
just...uplifting! To be an Alpha Man!

Have you ever asked the question, "Why do famous people who blatantly
reject God... prosper? Why do people who clearly worship other gods
such as money, sex, drugs, and violence seem to be the ones who gain all
of the wealth in the world while we who try our best to do the will of
God...struggle?
Recently, I made a commitment to God! I
told God that I would read and study the bible, more consistently.
Well, lets take off the words "more consistently" off the previous
sentence and just be honest. I need to get in the Word and stop making
excuses! "I'm too busy!" "It feels like I have homework!" "I don't
know where to start!"
What are your excuses???
I'm
honoring my commitment! Even though I wasn't sure where to start, that
didn't stop me, finally! lol In keeping with the question that
inspired this blog post, I wanted to know what God had to say about this
subject...so I Googled "success in the bible" and clicked one of the
top links called "Success According to the Bible." It is so on point.
It has inspired me to really dissect Deuteronomy 8:10-20 and
strategically apply it to my life. Check out the blue text below! A
MUST READ!!!
The world defines success in terms of achieving one's goal, acquiring wealth, status, prestige and power. Successful people are those defined as people enjoying the good life. In short, dollars, power and status is the central definitions of success in the world today. Such definitions have many fatal flaws when we consider the lives of the rich and famous whose lives are wrecked by pain and tragedies.
Success According to the Bible God's measurement of success is defined differently from that of the world. God's measure of success involves our obedience and faithfulness to Him, regardless of the opposition and trials we face. In short God's measure of our success is whether or not we are being loyal to Him and obey Him.
The determination of whether one is successful or not is answered by whether or not one is satisfied with one's life. It should not be based on or measured by someone else's standards. We should determine what our success is by God's standards for He is the one who has created us and He is the one who will judge us and by His standards.
Success is much more than just money and status. All others is temporary. When we leave this world, none of it will be of any use to us nor will it guarantee us eternal life. So should we define money and status, which is temporary, as real success? Who amongst the rich today can guarantee their happiness on earth and in heaven?
Does God Want Us To Succeed? God is not in the failure business. The scriptural truth is, God wants us to succeed. God's condition for success is simple - Obey Him and Obey His Laws.
God Wants Us to Succeed Proverbs 16:3 - Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.
God Wants Us to Prosper Jeremiah 29:11 - For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
God Gave Us the Ability to Produce Wealth Deuteronomy 8:18 - He gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.
